Now, we do not need to be in a perfect meditative state in order to be an effective channel for Reiki, but it certainly helps to cultivate a still and empty mind. We are all human and it is perfectly normal for unwanted thoughts to appear in our head. But we should pay them no attention. If we pay the unwanted thoughts attention and try to get rid of them we then have two lots of thoughts: the thoughts we did not want and all the new thoughts about the need to get rid of the first lot of thoughts. We have made things worse!
Though some people are taught that it is ok to talk and chat to people, or bystanders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when giving a Reiki treatment, to do such a thing is neither professional nor does it lead to effective treatments. If we are distracted then the energy flows less strongly, so if we want to do the best for our clients then we need to keep quiet, and encourage the client to keep quiet too. You can try an experiment for yourself if you like, to prove to yourself that distraction lessens the strength of your Reiki. You could try this at a Reiki share, for example. Start by resting your hands on someone’s shoulders and allow the energy to flow for a while. Then deliberately start up a conversation with someone sitting near you: take your attention away from the recipient and fully engage in the conversation. Do this for a few minutes. Then bring your attention back to the recipient, be still and quiet, and allow the energy to flow. How has the recipient’s experience of the energy varied?
This article is called “Get out of the way” because I believe that this is the best thing we can do when treating someone or when sending distant healing. We are not the source of the healing; we are not the source of the energy, so we do not need to be there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], directing and controlling. We can stand aside and if we do so then the energy can flow strongly and clearly, without interference from us.
So our intent when treating someone or sending distant healing is that the energy should do whatever is appropriate for the recipient. We are neutral,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we are detached, and we do not focus on outcomes. Ideally we should drift into a gentle meditative state when treating or sending distant healing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and this can be best achieved by our ‘disappearing’ into the energy, feeling ourselves merging with or becoming one with the energy. We merge with the energy and we merge with the recipient; we are empty. We do by not doing.

When we treat someone we are not ‘cheerleading’ for a particular end result: we do not give Reiki to get rid of someone’s head ache, or back ache, or to resolve their Gall Bladder problem, though of course these things may result from channelling Reiki. End results are out of our hands and to focus strongly on a particular purpose for the treatment is not helpful. Reiki will not be controlled by us in terms of end results and attempts to control the energy in this way just puts up barriers that prevent the energy from doing what it needs to do. Rather like the well-meaning amateur who gets in the way and prevents the professional from doing their job properly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our attempts to focus the energy to produce a particular end result will hinder the process for the recipient.

The best approach to unwanted thoughts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then, is to allow them to drift by like clouds: pay them no attention,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do not engage with them. They will leave. Some more may come,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but pay them no attention either. In time you should find that your busy mind starts to quieten and some of your treatments will become beautiful meditations, with your mind emptying with the energy, and staying empty. Some treatments will not be like this, of course, but we do not need to be perfect. We can cultivate a more meditative state over time, moving in the right direction, and without worrying too much about individual occasions when our untamed brain kept on talking to us. This is a work-in-progress!
The first thing I want to say is that we are just a channel for the energy, not the source of the energy. This seems an obvious thing to say, but we need to remember that we are not healers. We do not heal. We do not have that power. What we do when we treat someone is simply to create a ‘healing space’ that the recipient can use to move more into a state of balance. The recipient is responsible for their own healing, for what they experience or don’t experience; they are responsible for how they react to the treatment. They are healing themselves. We are just necessary bystanders in the process: we do not direct the energy and we do not determine the outcome.
So I am not so happy with the title “Reiki Healer” because it suggests that the Reiki practitioner has the power to heal; they do not. I don’t think that the title “Reiki Necessary Bystander” is going to catch on, so I prefer to use the title “Reiki Practitioner”. It describes what we do: we practise Reiki and it does not imply that we have the power to heal others.
So Reiki is simple: you empty your head, you merge with the energy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do you not direct, you do not control, you do not try; you empty yourself and merge with the recipient, standing aside to allow the energy do what it needs to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without interference from us.
In this short article I want to talk about the best way to approach working on other people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether giving treatments or carrying out distant healing. I want to talk about our state of mind and our intent when channelling the energy.

The use of interventions originated in 1960s with Dr. Vernon Johnson. The Johnson Model was subsequently taught years later at the Johnson Institute. This model pioneered way of intervention however has always come under scrutiny because of the "ambushing" nature that the model falls under. Despite some of the negative beliefs of the Johnson Model,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is still responsible for thousands of lives that have been turned around as the result of a Johnson Model Intervention. It should be noted however that in the last 20 years 3 other major models of intervention have been created and utilized within the field of intervention. We see time and again, smiles on everyone when good news, a compliment or encouragement is brought to that person. Wonderful words, laughing, sweet smells of something you recall, a healing touch, soothing music to your hears are all the ways to trigger healing. If you are sick surround yourself with positive people, laughter, music, books, pictures and thoughts. Keep your body and spirit filled with positive thoughts and words. Your promise of healing must have self control. Natural causes of aliments and disease and spiritual causes are all designed to work together. The medical profession usually deals with the natural causes and they rarely deal with the spiritual causes. Problems in one can show up in another. Just as you know what you think creates action in your life. Problems in my mind affect my emotions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the way my attitude and the way I physically feel. With all that at stake you can not give your thoughts free rein.

If you are determined to minimize your exposure and keep feeling good all through the holiday season, then read on.
Action Steps
If will-power is not your strong suit, don’t let anyone put any treat on your desk that you would not give your right arm to eat. If they do, physically remove it immediately.
Now, let’s get started.

Nine times out of ten the office treats aren’t that great — save your indulgences for later ( two per week max as per #3). If someone brings in their homemade treat baked with the help of the gods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go ahead and indulge but make sure to write it down as per #1.
3) Go to parties on a stomach full of protein and vegetables and healthy carbohydrates. Eat your healthy dinner before you go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. This will help keep those cravings and party binges to a minimum.
Some people have very mild food reactions and others have more pronounced reactions that really interfere with their quality of life.

Option No. 1: Take a very small piece of 4 or 5 different treats. Enough for a small mouthful of each. Then, as you indulge in each one, remember to s-a-v-o-u-r. Maximum flavour is obtained in that first bite and whether it’s a small bite or a large bit doesn’t make any difference to the taste.

Sometimes the answer will be a resounding, “Yes!” and other times, you may even shock yourself, it will be a “No, actually this isn’t really worth it.”
5) The Office Conundrum. Always have healthy snacks on you at the office, especially those that contain protein. Realize that the flood of office treats will make you react/flare-up before the holidays have even started.
Keeping a food log in this way keeps you honest and brings your attention back to the present and to what you are doing. This also forces you to pause for a few moments so you can really decide if this is the indulgence you want.
And make sure to sit back and s-a-v-o-u-r your indulgence. Turn your computer screen off and sit back in your chair. Since you are going to pay for this with a physical reaction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you might as well have maximum enjoyment.
If you are too much of a free spirit for that, then when you are about to indulge (before you pick something up and put it on your plate) think to yourself, “If I indulge here, I will only have one other indulgence left for the week (see below). Is this worth it?”
2) Keep your exercise/gym routine. Why? You’ll feel better about yourself and people who feel better about themselves make healthier food choices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
And make sure you eat your regular meals throughout the day as well. Starving yourself all day will make you binge in the evening. You’ll be so hungry, you’ll forget all about what you wanted to avoid until it’s too late.

Option No. 2: You’ll need to exercise some self-discipline, which shouldn’t be too hard if you (a) have a stomach full of veggies and protein and (b) keep your focus on what you want more: this umpteenth dessert,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the enjoyment of which will quickly become just a vague blur on the sea of food reactions that was also known as “December” or to feel comfortable in your body — no achy joints, miserable digestive systems or angry skin.
Avoiding your sensitivities can be tough for many people, what with all the holiday parties and holiday treats lurking around the office.
It’s all about your price: Is the price you pay for eating the foods you are sensitive and/or intolerant to not so bad, or way too great? The only who knows this is you.
5) Make it a 10. How many times have you eaten something at a party and then thought,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Why did I eat that whole thing? It wasn’t even that good!” Take a bite or a small piece of something and if it’s not a 10 out of 10, don’t eat anymore. Find something that’s a 10 and make that your indulgence. Or defer your indulgence to your next party.
If you indulge everyday, you will have many food reactions. Two snack-sized indulgences per week most likely will not set you off course as long as you don’t binge. Which,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you are following #2 above, shouldn’t be a problem.

The local news screams of the horrendous road toll over the Christmas period. ‘Life’ has made us too tired, too sad and too angry to be careful of ourselves and others. We’re all too manic and selfish and distracted. The summer has bought the drowning’s of our children as parents and guardians are more interested in consuming alcohol than keeping an eye on their offspring. Around the world Iran is nuclear testing, Iraq is at war, New York City is in disarray with ongoing protests in Occupy Wall Street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ethnic violence is ongoing and rampant in many parts of Africa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not to mention the ever increasing AIDS epidemic and famine. A rare disease,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], causing death,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has potentially broken out in Australia—thank god their an island on their own, I don’t think the rest of the world could handle any more crisis at the moment.
In one of my angst driven Google Searches about the plight of the planet I searched ‘is there a God’? The question was not faith or religiously motivated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more exasperatedly driven in a ‘surely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dear God, please, Is there a God, please,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is there hope on this desperately flailing land?’ And,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not one to be considerate of divine beings but the heavens did open on this day, for I stumbled across the World Transformation Movement. Finally I found the answer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact all the answers. I implore anyone that has lost hope in the world, that is helpless and worried, that too is loosing all meaning because grasping at reality is also bringing you handful of despair. I’ll quote their website in the hope of making you hopeful too: “Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], finding understanding of our dark, human-condition-afflicted, meaning of life-defying state makes us ‘whole’ again, as Jung said it would. To quote Professor Harry Prosen, a former president of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, on this dreamed-of, greatest of all breakthroughs in science: ‘I have no doubt this biological explanation of the human condition is the holy grail of insight we have sought for the psychological rehabilitation of the human race.’”

So no wonder our worried souls are driven toward happy, superficial distraction. The world is a mess and there’s no hope. Or so I thought!
I too in my superficial corner prefer to pre-occupy my thoughts with the marriage break-up of Katy Perry and the crazy but hilariously funny Englishman, considered a God. I’m less inclined to read the newspaper and will more readily spend my time perusing a fashion magazine, but oh the meaninglessness! Watching the World News may be considered more thought provoking and real than an obsession with the fake lives of the rich and famous but at least it doesn’t depress me like reality does.

We need to create hope for our children and we need to do it now. Hope for a future, hope for the world, for human kind and for their individual potential. We need to teach them to see the good in themselves, in their neighbors at home and in their neighbors on the other side of the world. Their neighbors do live everywhere, with the internet and instant communication, with jobs and services performed globally, products coming from all over the world. This generation needs us to focus on giving them hope. Hope is what unites us, what brings out the best in people. We remember world leaders who gave us hope fondly and a lot more than those who lived in fear. Don’t you think your children will remember you in the same way when you give them that crucial ingredient of a positive future, of hope for themselves and for human kind?
Parenting Tips: How can you do this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], step by step and in your everyday life? It doesn’t matter whether you are a parent, legal guardian, foster parent or grandparent, you can do very concrete things to help your child, your grand child to hope.
1. Change your words to be positive. From ‘don’t do this’ to ‘please do that’. From ‘you can’t’ to ‘what you can do is this or this’. The brain is positive focused and it has been shown to skip words as do not. When you say ‘Don’t forget’ the brain primarily registers ‘forget’! So change it to remember and aim for what you want to happen instead of what you didn’t want to happen. Or better put,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to what you HOPE will happen.
2. Focus you child on what they want to be,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on what they can be, on their dreams, sense of adventure, fantasies and desires. On what they hope will happen. The world becomes a magic place again that way.
3. Show them where they are now, in skills, ability and knowledge and show them a step by step path to success. In small steps so they can achieve success, create and build more hope.

It doesn’t matter from what country, with what religion, what color or gender people come. We all need hope. We all want to live a happy and rich life. The boy in a gang in L.A. or Mumbai wants it as much as the woman with AIDS in Africa or in a war in Afghanistan. So do the man and his little son working in sweatshops in India or China. With hope we have a common path, a shared destination.
Most of all, it starts with you. With you seeing all this yourself. In you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in others, in situations you encounter. Be kind to yourself and allow yourself hope over fear, a smile over a frown and to see positive potential in all around you. What on earth was she to do? She obviously wasn’t good enough for anything if her dad was right. We now have a generation of children and youth growing up with everyone around them expressing that they have to fear people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the world, to fear their future, to fear that others will come and harm them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], take their jobs. They learn to look at what they do, what they choose, with those fears in mind. Does that simulate confidence, trust and excitement about life, the world? Of course it doesn’t.
Fear is a strong emotion and politicians have used it to get re-elected for a decade now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trying to show us how everyone should be mistrusted, how military power is needed to hang onto what we have in a world filled with bad guys. It was not true then, as we know now, and it sure doesn’t help our children now to build confidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], excitement for a world interconnected,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], interdependent as never before.

ARMS AND SHOULDERS
Take your right arm and place it across your chest parallel to the ground. With your left hand, reach over and grab your right elbow. Now gently pull your right arm across your chest with your left hand. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds. Switch arms and perform the same stretch.
Here are the top five basic stretches to promote flexibility.
There are many views about stretching and its benefits. If done properly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stretching can be a relaxing and stress relieving experience. Some say that we should stretch before exercising. Others say we should stretch after exercising and still others emphasize stretching before and after. There is no substantial evidence about the benefits of stretching as it pertains to exercise or that it helps prevent injury. If you are involved in high-impact sports or athletic activity requiring the use of lots of agility, stretching could result in creating instability and actually result in injury.
GROIN STRETCH (SEATED)
Sit on the ground with the bottoms of your feet together. Spread your legs with knees bent to have the bottoms of your feet touching. Place your hands around your feet and hold them together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Now bend forward and place your elbows on your knees and gently push downward with your elbows while keeping your head up. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds.
TRICEPS AND UPPER BACK
In the standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart, raise your right hand to the sky,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then bend your elbow and place your right hand behind your back. Reach up over your head with your left hand and grab your right elbow. Now pull your right arm downward behind your back for a gentle stretch. Reverse arms and do it again. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds for each arm.
The main concern is too much precious time is spent focusing on stretching and thereby neglecting the cardio and strength training which are higher priorities. Performing all movement exercises,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be it strength training or cardio, results in promoting flexibility.
FOREARM STRETCH
After you’ve knocked out all those push-ups and pull-ups, you may experience some tightness in your forearms. This stretch will help to relieve the tightness. Reach your right arm out in front of you with your palm facing up as if you are making a hand signal for someone to stop. Reach over with your left hand and grab your right hand at the fingertips and gently pull back on your fingers. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds and then switch arms. For a variation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], try this stretch with the fingers facing downward and then pull back with the other hand.

QUAD STRETCH
In the standing position, bend your right knee backward and grab your foot at the ankle with your right hand. Pull your foot to your butt while keeping your other leg straight and both legs close together. Hold for 15 to 20 seconds. Then switch sides and do the same. For support you can put the free hand against a tree, wall or on a rail.
Top Five Basic Stretches to Promote Flexibility
HAMSTRING STRETCH
In the standing position,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], extend your right leg forward and your left leg is back. Both legs are only about two feet apart, which means this is not a wide position for your legs. Now, while bending the left leg as a lever and your right leg is straight with knee locked, bend down towards your right leg and reach for the toes. You are stretching the hamstring of your right leg. To leverage that stretch, simply bend the left knee; the more you bend the left knee, the greater the stretch. No bouncing! Hold that stretch for 15 to 20 seconds. Switch positions of your legs and repeat the stretch.
